Position Title: Nurse Practitioner (Part-Time)

Status: Part-Time (16 hours/week)

Compensation: $50,000 annually

Reports To: Collaborating Physicians (including Medical Director) and Executive Director

Position Summary

Luke's House Clinic is a free, bilingual, community clinic that has provided services to uninsured and underserved individuals throughout Greater New Orleans for nearly 20 years.

​

The clinic has over 20 volunteer medical professionals and trains over 60 students a year. The Nurse Practitioner will be Luke's House's first employed medical provider and will play a critical role in strengthening continuity of care, expanding clinical services, supporting volunteer providers and students, improving healthcare access, and helping shape the future direction of the clinic's medical programs.

The Nurse Practitioner will function as an integral member of Luke's House's interdisciplinary care team. The position is designed to enhance continuity and coordination of care across the clinic while supporting the organization's mission to provide compassionate, patient-centered healthcare and to train the next generation of healthcare professionals.

This position offers a unique opportunity to help build and shape an innovative model of community-based healthcare access, patient navigation, and medical education while serving a highly underserved population.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

General Clinical Care

  • Provide comprehensive primary care services within the NP scope of practice.

  • Assess, diagnose, treat, and manage acute and chronic medical conditions.

  • Order, review, and interpret laboratory and diagnostic studies and ensure timely patient follow-up and patient communication.

  • Prescribe medications and therapies in accordance with Louisiana law and collaborative practice agreements.

  • Conduct follow-up visits and continuity-of-care appointments.

  • Provide preventive care services including screenings, vaccinations, and health maintenance counseling.

  • Provide patient and family education that promotes self-management and disease prevention.

  • Administer vaccines and maintain accurate vaccine documentation in LINKS and other required systems.

  • Appropriately store and handle vaccines in accordance with the set requirements.

  • Support point-of-care testing and assist with laboratory quality assurance activities.

 

Women’s Health

  • Perform cervical cancer screening, including Pap smears and follow-up management.

  • Lead the HPV screening and prevention program.

  • Support contraceptive counseling, pregnancy intention screening, and reproductive health education.

  • Identify patients eligible for breast cancer screening and coordinate referrals to free or low-cost mammography services through community partners.

  • Monitor the follow-up and completion of abnormal cervical cancer screening referrals, including colposcopy and specialty care.

  • Collaborate with providers, students, and patient navigation staff to ensure women's health services are integrated into routine clinic workflows.

  • Supporting quality improvement efforts related to women's health outcomes, screening rates, and preventive care completion.

 

Clinical Leadership and Quality Improvement

  • Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.

  • Assist in developing and refining clinical protocols, workflows, standing orders, and best practices.

  • Review charts and clinical documentation to ensure quality, safety, and continuity of care.

  • Monitor key clinical outcomes and support data-driven program improvement efforts.

  • Support compliance with clinic policies, protocols, grant requirements, and regulatory standards.

  • Collaborate with patient navigation staff to address social, financial, linguistic, and healthcare access barriers.

 

Student and Volunteer Education

  • Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for medical, nursing, counseling, public health, and other healthcare students.

  • Conduct pre-clinic chart reviews and help students to identify preventive care needs, follow-up opportunities, and patient care priorities.

  • Lead or participate in pre-shift huddles with students, volunteers, and staff to review clinic workflows, patient needs, and educational objectives.

  • Participate in student orientation, training, and clinical teaching.

  • Support volunteer providers by communicating updates to clinic workflows, resources, and best practices.

  • Assist with educational initiatives that enhance the clinic's teaching mission.

  • Promote trauma-informed, evidence-based practice and patient-centered care among students and volunteers.

Qualifications

 

Required

  • Spanish language proficiency.

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.

  • Current Louisiana Registered Nurse (RN) license.

  • Current Louisiana Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) license.

  • Current national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) 

  • Current prescriptive authority in Louisiana or the ability to obtain upon hire.

  • Current BLS certification.

  • Experience with electronic health records.

  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Commitment to serving uninsured and underserved populations.

  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary and volunteer-driven environment.

 

Preferred

  • Experience working in community health centers, free clinics, primary care, women's health, or public health settings.

  • Experience working with immigrant, refugee, or underserved populations.

  • Experience precepting or teaching healthcare students.

  • Experience in quality improvement, care coordination, or program development.

  • Experience providing women's health services, including Pap smears, contraceptive counseling, and preventive reproductive healthcare.

  • Demonstrated comfort performing cervical cancer screening and managing follow-up care for abnormal screening results.

  • 2 years of experience

Schedule and Work Arrangement

This is a part-time position averaging 16 hours per week. 

​

The Nurse Practitioner is expected to be present during clinic operations on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30 PM to 8:30 PM. 

 

Typical clinic-day responsibilities could include:

 

2:30 PM – 4:00 PM

  • Laboratory and referral follow-up

  • Clinical workflow preparation

  • Inventory management

  • Quality improvement activities

  • Care coordination activities

 

4:00 PM – 8:30 PM

  • Chart review and pre-visit planning with team

  • Student and provider support

  • Direct patient care

 

Remaining weekly hours may be completed remotely or on-site and may include:

  • Patient follow-up and care coordination

  • Telehealth visits

  • Staff meetings

  • Provider meetings

  • Student education and mentorship

  • Board and committee meetings

  • Community partner meetings

  • Program development and grant-related activities

  • Other duties as assigned

 

Some flexibility in scheduling may be available based on clinic needs and program priorities.

 

Physical Requirements

The position requires standing, walking, sitting, bending, lifting supplies and equipment, and working in a clinical environment. The employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases and must follow all applicable safety and infection-control procedures.
